The Guangzhou Charge joined the Overwatch League in the 2019 season as part of several teams in the Asia region that newly joined. They operate out of Guangzhou, China and are owned by entertainment company Nenking Group. Their signature colours are light blue and navy, and they are displayed prominently in their logo, an emblazoned “GZ” in the shape of a lightning bolt. Since joining, the Charge have maintained consistently high standings, and have had several breakout moments.
The Charge’s roster consists of 7 active players. They are as follows:
Many of these names may seem unfamiliar to the Charge’s roster. Following the 2020 season, the Charge saw almost all of its veteran talent depart. Players such as nero, neptuno, happy, and shu all left to find new homes for the 2021 season. As a result, the Charge went on a recruiting spree and brought on many of the players who now make up their roster. The effects of this changeup have yet to be seen, but one would expect the Charge have some adjusting to do to accommodate their many roster changes.
In their first season of OWL competition, the Charge maintained a top 10 ranking, but failed to achieve much more outside of that. They finished 9th overall and likewise finished in the 9th/10th spot in the playoffs after falling to the Seoul Dynasty. In some ways, this performance was to be expected, and it was greatly reflected by the OWL betting odds. This season was the Charge’s first foray into the biggest Overwatch stage in the world, and they still needed to work on their chemistry. The Charge improved significantly in the 2020 season of the OWL. In each of the midseason tournaments, the Charge managed to place in the top 8 spots. What’s more, despite being the heavy underdog, the Charge beat out the Shanghai Dragons to take first place in the Overwatch League Summer Showdown. From there, they went on to finish with the 5th overall record in their division and take the 4th place spot in the Asia division playoffs.
