Different Types of Esports Events
There are several types of Esports Events, for each and every single esport. The main types of Esports events are Leagues, Minors, Majors and Premier Events. The majority of tournaments are based in a League format where teams match up in a group stage and place highly to battle it out in a playoff bracket.
Minor Esports Events
The majority of Minor Esports events are qualification tournaments to bigger tournaments, like the Major Esports events. Most of these types of events feature an open qualifier where any team that is eligible can partake and qualify. Generally, these events don’t carry a huge prize pool, as they are a side-event and not the main event, such as the VALORANT Challengers for instance.
Major Esports Events
Major Esports events are considered as big events which happen more than once annually. These events carry a big prize pool, and most of the teams that participate in these tournaments qualify through the Minor Esports events. One example of a Major Esports event is Intel Extreme Masters or the Rainbow Six ECL.
Premier Esports Events
Premier Esports events are the biggest events of the year. This is because for most of these events, teams need to accumulate points from previous tournaments or leagues to qualify. Meaning that the teams that get to participate in these types of events are the best teams at that particular period. An example of a Major Esports event would be the League of Legends World Championship or The International.
Different Types Of Esports Events Formats
Every Esports Event consists of a specific type of tournament format. The most popular formats are: Round Robin, Double Round Robin, Swiss, Single Elimination Bracket, Double Elimination Bracket.
Different Match Types
There are different match types for each event format. For example, in a Round Robin we are usually faced with a best of 1 match type since each team is playing against every single team in its group.
A best of 2 match type is not very common but it can be found in a double round-robin format, where teams have a second match against every single team in a round-robin format.
The best of 3 match types is the most common match type by far, as this allows teams to pick and ban accordingly (Depending on the esport) to fit their playstyle. We find this match type in most formats, especially bracket based formats.
Lastly, we have the best of 5 match type, which is generally used in the Grand Finals of an event.
Groups Stage
When it comes to Group-based formats, Round Robin, Double Round Robin, and Swiss format have always been the most common. This is because it allows each team to play against all of their opponents in the same group. After a group stage is concluded, there are usually 1 or 2 top teams of each group which qualify to the playoffs.
Playoffs Stage
The playoffs stage is commonly played out after a group stage (as mentioned above). It is usually made up of teams that qualify through the group stage or have been invited by the tournament organiser. This is not always the case, however, as sometimes, the playoffs format can be played in a form of a single or double elimination bracket.
The difference between a single and double elimination bracket is very simple. In the single-elimination, teams have only one shot at climbing through the bracket to reach the grand finals. However, in the double-elimination bracket, teams have a second opportunity at climbing the bracket through the losers bracket.
